Gunkanjima Tour

  • Introduction to Gunkanjima

Gunkanjima, also known as Battleship Island, is a small island located near Nagasaki, Japan.
It was once a coal mining island and was home to many people during its peak in the early 20th century.
The island is famous for its dense concrete buildings, which made it look like a battleship from the sea.
After the coal mine closed, the island was abandoned, and today it can be visited by guided tours as a historical site.

Visitors go to Gunkanjima by tour boat.

This is a shipyard at Nagasaki Port.
It is one of the largest shipyards in Japan, and it once built the battleship Musashi.

This is the battleship Musashi.

Before going to Gunkanjima, this sightseeing boat stops at a small island along the way.
On that island, we saw a model of Gunkanjima.

At last, Gunkanjima is coming into view.

Don’t you think it really looks like a battleship?

Up close, you can see that concrete buildings are standing side by side.

The weather was good that day, and fortunately, we were able to land on Gunkanjima.

Actually, the waters around Gunkanjima are rough, so it’s often difficult to land on the island.
If the weather is bad, landing is not allowed.

Many people used to work here. Now, all the buildings are abandoned and in ruins.
It somehow feels like a scary place.

Gunkanjima has underground coal mine tunnels that were used to extract coal when the island was active.
The tunnels are quite deep and extensive, reaching dozens of meters below the island’s surface, and in some areas, they extend beneath the seabed.
These tunnels show how workers lived and worked underground and demonstrate the scale of mining operations on the island.
